All you might want to know about our LARP setting of Dark Pressburg

Pressburg

Pressburg is a fantasy version of the real world city of Bratislava. While their maps might look the same, Pressburg is a much larger, more cosmopolitan metropolis, unmatched in the Central Europe. The towers and skyscrapers are taller, the tunnels and cellars go deeper, the forests and parks are larger, darker, filled with terrors and wonders. The streets are rich with both money and Essence, anything can be bought for a right price, and the waters of Donau are regularly colored by both blood and Vitae of the Pressburgers.

Pressburg is currently an Anarch domain, following the revolutionary night known as The Night of Blunt Knives. The mantle of leadership was taken up by Baron Barnabas, a hero of the Night of Blunt Knives. Baron practised a hands-off approach, which made Pressburg an attractive location for all kinds of Kindred – most notably, a lot of refugees from clan Tremere, after the destruction of their Chantry in Vienna.

Pressburg is known for its esoteric, mystical past. Going back all the way to the founding of the city, rituals, seances, religious visions and secret cabals were all part of Pressburgian identity for more than 2000 years. All religions are represented in Pressburg, from small pagan covens through all Abrahamic religions to the vaguely spiritual cults; Pressburg is a melting pot of what is and is not holy.

Modern Pressburg is all about contrasts: the tall, modern skyscrapers vs the rich architecture of the Old Town; the churches preach virtue while nightclubs overflow with sex, drugs and hard music; the kids play daily on the streets that are battlefields of unknown forces every night.

Pressburg is a city where everyone has an equal opportunity to try and make something of their (Second) life. Anyone can come and try to claim a better place for them – they just have to either be strong enough, or cunning enough to have the right allies.

The neon8

Club Neon8 is a newly opened Pressburg club for all clientele – breathing or not. The upper floor is a regular, normal club with a neon aesthetic, alluring to Kindred and humans alike. The roots of the Neon8 tree run deep, with every floor a little more debaucherous than the last one.

The Kindred know of three floors – below the club lies an illegal casino, where all bets are allowed, and no game is off-limits. Underneath that, deeper still, a club no human has ever seen twice – the secret Kindred club, and the seat of the Baron of Pressburg.

It was here where the Night of Blunt Knives started, an ember of discontent becoming a roaring flame that consumed the Camarilla of this city. But that was fifteen years ago, and now the third floor of the club has a calmer, quieter atmosphere. Maybe the arrival of The Red Comet will shake the dust off the bar shelves again, and the club will once again be a place of roaring laughter and passionate fights.

But just like the humans gossip about a mysterious third floor, Kindred tell tales of a mysterious fourth floor. How deep does the club really go? What happens in places customers never reach? And who is the mysterious owner of the club, seen previously arguing with the Baron?

The Night Of Blunt Knives

The events leading to the Anarch revolution can be divided into three distinct categories.

First, the context of the rise of Anarchs in the 20th and 21st centuries. Of course, Anarchs have been a faction for centuries, but only lately they have been known to hold any territories without immediate catastrophies.

Second is the rising threat of The Second Inquisition, mainly sacking of Pressburgs neighbouring capitals, Vienna and Prague. In these uncertain times, any leadership that simply focuses on maintaining the status quo (such as Camarilla) quickly loses the most important support group – the silent majority.

And thirdly, the personal composition of the local Anarch movement. The right combination of personalities that eventually created the breeding ground of dissenting ideas, which in turn attracted drifters and professional rebel rousers. Such was the case with one of the most influential men of the Night of Blunt Knives, Antonio Rosso.

Chapter 1 – Arrival

The Anarchs of Pressburg gather to celebrate the arrival of the Red Comet, a rare chance for the movement to meet in one place. Yet unease hangs heavy in the air – the laughter is forced, the glasses fall from unsure hands and noone wanders the night alone – for some believe that the Comet augurs dark times.

As tensions rise among the Anarchs and old grudges threaten to surface, all that call Pressburg their home must find a way to avoid a fight – or, if everything else fails, to choose a side. As if that wasn’t enough, the shadow of the Camarilla still lingers in the city, and the Inquisition draws ever closer.

The newly established Warcouncil has to deal with the fallout of years of safe, distant rule of Baron Barnabas. Rumours speak of others who want to claim his inheritance: friends, enemies, lovers and rivals, all emboldened by his sudden disappearance.

The Red Comet still looms in the skies above, its scintillating glow tearing apart the veil between our world and the world of Umbra. Ghosts, spirits and apparition wander the streets of the city, unseen by most, felt by all. And something much more substantial seems to prowl the back alleys and dark cellars of Pressburg. Preying on humans and Kindred, most who met her died slowly. Those few who lived gave her a name, though most of them won’t say it out loud: She that Crawls.

Chapter 2 – Damocles

The Warmistress of Pressburg called the Anarchs to council. With Baron Barnabas gone and the old order in ashes, the time had come to decide what would rise in its place. Policies had to be forged. Authority had to be defined. A domain had to be built – together.

But unity is easily spoken of and rarely achieved. On matters fundamental to the soul of the movement, voices clashed. Ideals fractured. Negotiations stretched long into the night, tense and fragile, the future of Pressburg hanging by a thread. Only urgent necessity broke the deadlock.

Word reached the council of a relic thought lost to history: the Sword of Saint Michael – a blade once wielded by Anarchs during the Pressburg Revolution, a symbol of defiance whispered to have made that uprising possible at all. Coteries were sent into the haunted streets to recover it. The city did not yield its secrets willingly. In the shadowed alleys and forgotten places beneath Pressburg, they encountered the thing survivors dare only name in whispers – She That Crawls. Hunter of Kindred. Devourer in the dark. They escaped her grasp by the narrowest margin, spared Final Death by luck, desperation, or fate.

But the night was far from over. A ghost from the revolution returned. A rumored member of the Blunt Knives — the Anarch cell that helped Baron Barnabas topple the Ivory Tower — resurfaced after years of silence. Jean-Pierre Lapelle did not come seeking reunion. He came starving. For blood. Kindred blood. Steel met fang in the streets of Pressburg as the Warmistress and her Anarchs fought the frenzied Frenchman. What might have been massacre turned, at the last moment, by the rediscovered Sword of Saint Michael — relic and weapon both. Dawn approached with the city still standing… but far from united. Some Anarchs left the council dissatisfied. Some left afraid. All left knowing the fragile future of their domain hangs beneath an omen still burning overhead. The Red Comet shines brighter than ever.

Chapter 3 – Zenith

The Red Comet peaked, and the Kindred of Pressburg huddled together in club Neon8 to wait for the cosmic catastrophe to end. The light invaded the club, summoning specters and visions, including the one of Baron Barnabas himself.

With the help of Bajarka, the Kindred looked through time and bore witness to the immediate aftermath of The Night of Blunt Knives, and saw an argument between Antonio Rosso and Baron about the values of the revolution they fought.

Several religious figures introduced themselves, trying to offer comfort and guidance in these trying times. Dealers of Red Mist, group that only grew under Warcouncils lax drug policies, also came to offer some comfort, much to the dismay of the anti-drug clique of Pressburg.

By the end of the night, the magic of the Red Comet reached its Zenith, which lead to death of Antonio Rosso and the resurrection of Baron Barnabas, though the latter required a lot of sacrifice on the side of the Pressburg Kindred.

Newly revived Barnabas got into an altercation with Brujah Gabriel and Setite Olivia, after which Baron proclaimed that he will from now on focus on protecting the Kindred of Pressburg from outside threats rather than “ruling” directly.

Everybody clapped.

Baron Barnabas of pressburg

Barnabas, Baron of Pressburg, was relatively young for his position – or so say those who haven’t met him. Those that have know that his age is the smallest, least important entry on a long list of complains.

He rose to power after practically single-handedly defeating the local Camarilla during the Night of Blunt Knives, an event named after his weapons of choice – two large butcher cleavers that went blunt during his rampage through the Ivory Tower of Pressburg, as he cut his way through opposing Kindred and Ghouls. Some say his position was a reward for a job well done, others suggest that after witnessing the massacre, even his comrades in arms were afraid of him, and let him rot in the place of his greatest battle as they took positions in other Anarch domains.

Isolated, he secluded himself in his office in Club Neon8, where he once hung out with his brothers and sisters in arms, planning the glorious revolution against the Camarilla. While his fighting prowess remained unmatched, he favoured a hands-off approach when it came to leading, opening the doors of Pressburg to everyone and letting them govern themselves, only ever acting when it came to executing threats to the city herself.

At the beginning of the Crisis of the Red Comet, Baron sacrificed his life to protect the Kindred of Pressburg from the wrath of the Prophet of the Comet. Afterwards he came back, morphed into a stronger, more cunning version of the Prophet, threatening the city with destruction unless they meet his demands for blood.

The Kindred of Pressburg met once more during the Zenith of the Red Comet. With help of mage Bajarka, through terrible sacrifices they brought Baron back to unlife. Back to his old ways of ignoring every non-existential problem, Baron is no longer the martyr and is once again a controversial, polarizing figure he was before.

Dušan, the Digital Debonaire

The mysterious Dušan was a figure in the Slovak digital circles long before he made himself known to the Kindred. He proclaims to be a an ally of the Kindred, as well as “all those who seek the Truth”.

Dušan is maintaining the cybersecurity of Kindred forums in Pressburg, making sure that the Masquerade is not breached. However, many wonder if he himself is not a breach – some of his remarks on the forum made Kindred believe he is not one of them but a different supernatural entity, or maybe even a particularly gifted human. Attempts to find him ended with humiliation to the seekers and his increased hostility towards the ruling parts of the Anarchs of Pressburg. However, sincere apologies in the form of his beloved poppy seed cakes and genuine effort put into protecting the mortals of Pressburg seem to have once again swayed his heart (if he indeed possesses such an organ) towards the undead population of Pressburg.

Dušan seems to enjoy looking for the truth, whether in the form of actual investigation or puzzles that tests ones intellect. He also likes to tease the truth as a price, and overall works as an information broker – however, he rarely accepts the payment in mortal money. Truths, good deeds and occasional compliments seem to be payment enough for him.

We could comb over all the little details we collected over the months for many more pages, but the “truth” is, we do not really know who Dušan is, or the power he wields. What we do know is that he is powerful, influential and tends to keep his word once he gives it.
